Environment Canada issues extreme cold warning for parts of B.C. near Alberta

Arctic air mass combined with a north wind is bringing wind chill values near -40 C to the Peace River region

Environment Canada has issued extreme cold warnings for several parts of British Columbia along the Alberta boundary.

According to the weather agency, wind chill values in the Peace River region are near -40 C due to an Arctic air mass and a north wind. This includes the communities of Fort St. John (and Dawson Creek).

The cold weather was expected to continue until Tuesday, with some warming on Wednesday.

To the south, an alert has been issued for Elk Valley and Yoho national parcs. Environment Canada states that wind chill values close to -35 are possible overnight and Tuesday night.

It said that temperatures would moderate during the day.

The weather agency warns against wind chills below -40, as they can cause frostbite and raise the risk for hypothermia.

It said that overnight wind chill values of -10-15 were expected in Metro Vancouver and Howe Sound until temperatures gradually rise later this week.
