Following protests at two motorway service station in Surrey, four climate activists were arrested.

According to Surrey police, Nathan McGovern, 22, Amber Alexander (18), Louis Hawkins (22), and Rosa Sharkey (22), were charged with criminal damage exceeding 5,000.

The force added that four additional people are still in custody.

Officers were dispatched to Clacket Lane Services in Kent and Cobham Services in Surrey shortly after 7 am on Thursday due to reports of protestors at the sites, gluing their bodies to pumps and blocking access from the forecourts.

Surrey police claimed that protests damaged 55 pumps.

According to the force, McGovern, Alexander and Hawkins appeared at Crawley magistrates’ court on Friday afternoon. They were released under police bail, subject to certain conditions.

All four were held on bail under the condition that they do NOT enter the county of Surrey, except for court attendance, and that they do NOT enter any petrol stations in England and Wales.

Bail conditions also required that they live and sleep at their homes, not attach themselves to any petrol station or tanker, and not associate with other defendants except for prearranged solicitor appointments or at the court.

McGovern is also required by law to wear an electronic tag
