The teams are surrounded by the natural beauty of the island sanctuary in North Eastern Palawan. Their shared love for nature has inspired them to become environmental custodians.

Meet Bernard, one the Aquos Foundation’s invaluable team heads. He leads its local conservation efforts and research initiatives. The environmental arm of Banwa Private Island is the Aquos Foundation. Its mission is to conserve, protect, and nurture the rich biodiversity within and around the marine protected area.

Bernard grew up in Palawan and developed a strong love for flora, fauna, and wildlife from a young age. His gift of empathy and care for people and the environment has been a hallmark of his career as a registered nurse. Bernard, a pioneer in Aquos Foundation has played an important role in protecting and restoring habitats for the critically endangered Mantanani Scops Owl and Hawksbill Turtle and the Tabon Bird, Megapode.

Bernard works with scientists and researchers to record the growth of birdlife, from 15 species in 2014 up to 60 species by using area search methods and photographic documentation. Tabon Bird nests increased from 3 nests in 2012, to 200 nests by 2021. The island landscape is a great habitat for many migratory and indigenous birds.

As part of the Reef Rehabilitation Programme, 180 reef balls were placed on the seafloor in 2018. This provided shelter for Hawksbill Turtles. Bernard is currently studying to become a Dive Master. Bernard learned to swim with a lifejacket. He proudly inspects the reef balls filled with vibrant marine life and growing coral colonies.

Each morning, Bernard will inspect the Megapode nesting locations at Tabon Bird Sanctuary as well as the Hawksbill Turtle nesting grounds in the Coconut Grove. Since 2016, more than 5,800 Hawksbill Turtle egg were laid. 60% of the hatchlings have emerged.

Guests can join Bernard on nature walks around island, snorkeling the reef and exploring the radiant Corals. Counting local bird species can be done in the lush vegetation. Guests can also witness the miracle of baby turtles being released into the turquoise waters.
