The lack of evidence has hampered the clampdown on Pine forest clearing
NASSAU BAHAMAS Minister of Environment and Natural Resources Vaughn Miller yesterday sympathized with Bahamians that have applied for Crown Land, but have not received a response after several years.
The minister however stated that the law must be followed.
Miller informed that cease and desist orders had been issued to several individuals for occupying and using Crown Land without their approval.

Concerns have been raised about illegally clearing Pine forests and areas designated as water tables.
Miller explained to media that there was not enough evidence to support the ministry’s efforts to crack down on the practice. However, Miller said that they are exploring options.
He clarified that while his ministry is responsible in issuing notices and enforcement falls to authorities.
Miller said that when we have the evidence, they give it to the authorities. Then they will be able to take action.
As it stands now, we don’t have any evidence as to who did it or contributed to it.
We advise people to stop and to desist.
This is a multi-agency approach. We are not the only ones who need to be involved in this.
Clint Watson, the Office of the Premier Minister’s Press Secretary, said that the issue of Crown Land is a matter where Bahamians have been struggling with inefficiencies in Crown Land applications for far too many years.
He asked for patience as the Davis administration implements steps that will speed up the process.

Watson warned, in a similar vein, that those who violate the law outraged by a lack of response to their applications endanger the process of future Crown Land and Bahamian application.
He said that everyone must obey the law.
Watson asked that you allow the administration to implement better practices and procedures, without trying to control things.
This can cause confusion for many other Bahamians looking to gain access to land.
We are asking you to allow the system to function and to allow the Davis administration these efficiencies to ensure you get answers without violating the law.
He added that efficiency will be improved. We may not be capable of solving all problems in four-and-a-half to five years. Although we may not be able give you this incredible electronic system, what we can promise you is greater efficiency. It has been missing for many years, and a lot of attention has been paid to it.
Watson acknowledged that no Bahamian should be subject to repeated checks with no response.
