A: We will be starting in the spring with herbs such as basil and parsley in the Kenosha area, Chicago, and Milwaukee. We have several key positions filled at the moment. We were on the ground every day, working to finish the facility and plant it. We were also hiring 25 people total, so we are also currently looking to fill other roles.

Q: How did Square Roots become involved in your life?

A: Actually, a decade ago, I just fell in love gardening and cooking. So I got involved in local agriculture. One of the problems with local farming is winter. Square Roots has a great opportunity because they grow year-round.

Q: What is this career you want?

A: I was interested in doing something environmentally. I liked that they used 95 percent less water and were pesticide-free so it’s a product that I can support. This was the perfect opportunity for me as a young person who wanted to make the world a better place.

Q: Which crop is your favorite to grow?

A: Yes, basil. It smells magical if you’ve ever been in a room with basil. It’s a great place to work. Basil can easily get bruised, you know. Basil needs to be treated with kindness. It is a crop I love.
