The Fedora Project AnnouncementToday, the Fedora Linux 36 beta version is available for public testing.
Fedora Linux 36, the next major version the popular GNU/Linux distribution, is currently in active development. It should be available later this Spring, on April 26th 2022, if all goes according to plan.
Fedora Linux 36 ships in conjunction with the recently released GNOME 42You can download the desktop environment series for the flagship Workstation edition to test it out on your own computer. It also contains the most recent versions the KDE Plasma and Xfce LXQt, LXDE and Cinnamon graphical environments from the Fedora Spins.
The upcoming Fedora Linux 36 release will include new features such as Wayland sessions being enabled by default in GDM for NVIDIA proprietary drivers, Noto Fonts as default font for most languages to improve text rendering consistency, administrators being automatically created in the Anaconda graphic installer and plocate as default locate implementation.
The next release also moves the RPM databases to the /var location instead of /usr. It introduces a cockpit Module to make file sharing with Samba with NFS easier. It supports unit names in systemd message, adds /var to its own Btrfs Subvolume for new Silverblue or Kinoite installations, improves Fedora upgrades with module streams enabled, and updates package management to only install recommended packages on upgrades.
Fedora Linux 36 also removes legacy network configuration files support in NetworkManager by default, updates existing default Malayalam fonts and adds new requirements to the akmods binary Kernel modules in the Silverblue, Kinoite flavors. It replaces the fbdev driver with simpledrm, the DRM-fbdev emulation layers, and enforces authselect consistency.
