FERNs Livestock project is a multi-part investigation into rural conflicts between large animal production facilities and local community.

These farms (also known as CAFOs) are controversial within the environmental community. However, rural residents who live in these facilities with thousands of animals get little attention. We have come across a range of grievances and concerns in our reporting on this issue, including protests, lawsuits, permit battles, and local hearings.

This series will address the issue of social injustice. The people most affected by these facilities are typically poor, rural, or people of color. We also hope to demonstrate the importance of environmental justice through robust reporting. Lastly, we will examine the role of local regulatory and political authorities, both positive and negative.
