Gates Elementary uses positive reinforcement to create a healthy learning environment

GRAND ISLAND (Neb. (KSNB-Grand Island Elementary School uses a positive support system based on research to create a healthy learning environment.

Gator Bucks is one of the methods they use. Staff members will give Gator Bucks to students who do good deeds. Gator Bucks are a hit with Gates Staffers.

Our teachers and all staff members have Great Gators tickets. These are for respectful, responsible and safe behavior. Students can demonstrate these in the classroom, cafeteria, and hallways, Kashi Velasquez, cognitive learning specialist, said.

The school has a second tier for students who need extra behavioral support. This includes checking in with students and giving breaks to students so they can focus on their learning.

Joe Eckerman, Gates Principal says this program not only benefits students, but also teachers.

Eckerman stated that both these interventions are positive and provide feedback to the teacher.

Velasquez complimented the style of dealing with bad behavior by saying that it helps keep children in school, where they belong.
