Abderrahim Kitouni from the GNOME Release Team announced today that the beta version for public testing is now available.
GNOME 42 beta is now available for early adoption by technology enthusiasts who want to experience the new features and enhancements in the upcoming desktop environment.
This beta release continues to be developed for GNOME 42. More apps were ported to the GTK4 Toolkit and libadwaitaThe highly-anticipated Built-in screencast and screenshot featureThis release replaces the GNOME Screenshot utility, which is not available in this version. It also includes the new Appearance panel that supports Light and Dark styles.
“This release adds libadwaita, which contains building blocks for modern GNOME applications. It also includes gtksourceview Version 5 and libsoup Version 3. Clutter libraries, which were deprecated in GNOME 41, have been removed,” said Abderrahim Kitouni.
GNOME 42 beta includes improved Bluetooth support, including the ability to export battery information for Bluetooth devices, and the ability to check if any input devices have been connected to display a confirmation dialog to disable Bluetooth. There are also async methods to create thumbnails, and better support for Flatpak apps.
Calls app now supports adding contacts from call history, tel URIs in SIP provider, and the ability set preferred audio codecs via Gsetting. The Calendar app got better timezone handling, and a revamped Year view that acts as a month navigator. The Maps app now supports OpenStreetMap locations URLs format in its search bar.
