GNOMEIt is a free and open-source desktop environment that provides a graphical user experience and a suite of applications for Linux-based operating system. GNOME 42 was releasedThis week.
GNOME 42 includes a new global dark mode, a new screenshot experience, and other changes.
The newDark Style PreferenceThis allows users to set their systems to use dark mode with all apps that support it, even system apps. Even wallpapers will switch to dark mode once enabled.
Users can also choose whether certain apps will open in dark mode or light mode, regardless if they have global preferences.
GNOME 42’s new Take a screenshotThe Print Screen key is pressed on your keyboard. A pop-up appears allowing you to save a photo or record a short video that shows just a small portion of the screen.
New Text EditorConsoleApplications are now the default apps to edit text or open a terminal emulator. Both support features include tabs, dark mode, and other options.
GNOME has also contributed to this effort. Many core applications have been updated to GTK 4 and libadwaita, which developers say brings performance improvements and a “new modern UI style.” Upgraded apps include the Calendar, Contacts, Calculator, Clocks, and GNOME Software application manager.
Other changes include support forRDP protocol in GNOME remote desktop software, a scrollable pathbar in theFiles appImprovements to theBoxesVirtualization app and support for media playback control in theVideosApp using media controls from within the notification area
