NEW DELHI: The Delhi government’s environment department was facing a major staff shortage. On Wednesday, Gopal Rai, environment minister, said that the new workforce, which includes 22 green fellows and 30 junior environmental engineers, will take charge of the capital cities fight against pollution.

The engineers and fellows will strengthen the government’s enforcement of environmental regulations and regulatory measures. A unique fellowship program was established by the government to allow young professionals to contribute to Delhi’s green initiatives. The junior environmental engineers will also act as a force multiplier to the Delhi Pollution Control Committee, a senior Delhi government official said.

Rai said that the Green Delhi fellowship program is a unique government initiative for young, motivated professionals to contribute innovatively to Delhis environmental governance. The minister also stated that 30 junior environmental engineers were hired for the first-time in nearly three decades.

Reena Gopta, advisor to minister, said, “The Green Delhi fellows/engineers will support the initiatives being taken by the department.” They will assist the department with data analysis, field work, empirical research, and other tasks. They will also help to strengthen the forest department.

Senior officials from the department will supervise the fellows and engineers as they work on environmental issues such as air pollution, preservation of forests and wetlands, Yamuna cleaning, and solid waste management.
