PHNOM PENH – Green Songkran an event being organised in Kampong Speu province by a group of environmental activists to celebrate the upcoming Khmer New Year while promoting public awareness on the environment not only showcases Cambodian culture and traditions but is also an occasion to inspire people to help protect the environment and natural resources, according to Ministry of Environment spokesman Neth Pheaktra.
Public participation is a contribution to the government’s efforts in promoting the local economy by creating jobs and generating incomes for the communities, Pheaktra said while presiding over the event in Trapaing Chor commune of the province’s Oral district on April 8.
According to Pheaktra the event is being hosted by Baitong Warriors (or Green Warriors) in Boeung Lvea which is a potential site for ecotourism.
He noted that Trapaingchor commune has abundant natural lakes and community forests, which offer great potential for ecotourism. Baitong Warriors have supported and improved the livelihoods of the community through ecotourism, thereby reducing the dependence on nature. The group’s works have received support from the ministry and Kampong Speu Provincial Administration.
Trapaing Chor residents have inherited natural heritage. Boeung Peam Lvea is a community forest that is surrounded by mountains. These natural resources are valuable and never run dry, and they create jobs for people in the community through ecotourism.
Pheaktra urged all people to help preserve the natural resources, forests, and wildlife of the area in order to maximize their potential.
Baitong Songkran will be celebrated with exhibition stalls that showcase products from Trapaingchor commune. You will also find products made of waste, snares or homemade guns as well as chainsaws that were used in forestry crime over time.
Tan Kim Sour, Baitong Sangkran organizer, stated that this event aims at promoting Cambodian culture, tradition, and history as part of the Khmer New Year celebrations.
Sor Soputra, Deputy Provincial Governor, stated: We support all initiatives to promote this Boeung Lvea area as an attractive ecotourism destination.
