Climate Action Haldimand–Norfolk will join forces and march to the offices Haldimand–Norfolk MP Toby Barrett and Leslyn Lewis, before heading to the Norfolk County administration building on Friday.
The group, which includes about a dozen people is asking for government to increase efforts to lower greenhouse gasses and address mitigation strategies such tree planting and natural restoration.
Cathy Salvatore, a member of the group, said that the government has lots of strategies and experts they could use.
Salvatore explained that taxpayers dollars will be used to restore infrastructure damaged by natural catastrophes. This is because the cost of the repairs will increase as climate change causes environmental conditions to worsen.
They are quietly doing small tasks; we just have the need to accelerate, Salvatore said. We want the county make concrete commitments and give timelines. It’s becoming more expensive to put it off. The sooner we act, the more effective we can address it.
Salvatore mentioned changes such as the installation of municipal composting programs and buildings that are more energy efficient as ways to reduce the county’s carbon footprint.
The group wants to send its message to candidates and voters in the upcoming municipal and provincial elections.
Salvatore stated that we want to push climate change issues to candidates in elections and provide voters with information about where they stand on the issue.
Friday’s march will take place from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. It will begin at Barrett’s office at B-50 Gilbertson Dr. and travel to Lewis’ office at 185 Robinson St. before arriving at the Norfolk County administration at 40 Colborne St. S.
The group is encouraging members of the community to join the march.
