WILMINGTON (N.C.) – Earth Day is celebrated every year on April 22nd. However, the Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity strives to make it a daily goal to protect the environment.
They take in donations all year to support their ReStore. All the items are taken and resold for a fraction the cost. It not only provides a cheaper option to those in need, but it also prevents unnecessary items from piling up in landfills.
Erin Ford, Store Manager, stated that everything you see here can easily be saved and resold at the store. We try to sell all that comes in so that it doesn’t end up in the landfill. This way, we can reduce waste and make it more valuable.
The store can repurpose almost any item. From couches, office chairs, desks, sinks, bathtubs, and more, the store can repurpose almost anything. After they are brought in, they are evaluated and then placed on the floor for sale to the public.
Nearly full, the New Hanover County landfill was as of this year. It is expected to last for around 28 years more.
Ford said that they do this to ensure that items are out the door as quickly as possible.
She said that every day, people are selling items that have come in. Then there’s the problem of a lot of things that don’t make it to the landfill.
Habitat for Humanity is well-known for helping those in need by building homes. Workers say it is what keeps them coming back every day.
Employee Sarah Williams says that the organization is incredible. It’s a great place to work. It makes me feel good to do things for the community. It’s a great feeling to work here.
Everyday, the ReStore accepts donations from 9:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
