HBO Responds to Claims of Euphoria Due To A Toxic Work Environment

HBO is addressing the rumors that their hit teen drama series Euphoria had “multiple complaints made to SAG-AFTRA” regarding a toxic production environment while making its latest season, Variety reports.

The network released a statement on Friday saying that the safety of the cast and crew is their top priority, and that no “formal inquires” were ever raised.

“The well-being of cast and crew on our productions is always a top priority,” the statement, which was acquired by Variety, reads. “The production was in full compliance with all safety guidelines and guild protocols. It’s not uncommon for drama series to have complex shoots, and COVID protocols add an additional layer. We maintain open communication with all guilds, SAG AFTRA included. There were never any formal inquiries raised.”

Initial talk swirled about drama on set last week when The Daily Beast reported that there had been several complaints from background actors about production not providing meals on time and refusing to let them use the bathroom. Talk of excessively long shoot times also surfaced.

The publication also cited a rift that was alleged to have occurred between Euphoria director Sam Levinson and actress Barbie Ferreira, who plays the character Kat. Production sources told the outlet that Ferreira had walked off set twice during the making of Season 2 because she disagreed with the direction of her character. Ferreira’s screentime was also notably cut short this season, with many highlighting the feud between her and the director being the reason why.

Nonetheless, Euphoria still became HBO’s second most-watched series, sitting only behind Game of Thrones The Season 2 finale aired on Sunday. HBO Max was temporarily unable to stream it. The show has been renewed for a new season.
