Howmet Aerospace releases 2021 Environmental, Social, and Governance Report

PITTSBURGH, April 8, 2022–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Howmet Aerospace (NYSE:HWM) has released its 2021 Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Report. The report highlights Howmet Aerospace’s commitment to sustainability and details its results against key metrics that are designed to make a significant positive impact on its stakeholders as well as the communities it serves. The report highlights Howmets key technologies as well as advanced products that help customers reduce environmental impacts through lowering fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

Plant, the Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, stated, “Howmet Aerospace is committed improving our environmental footprint, creating an environment where all employees thrive, investing in communities where we operate, and maintaining good governance principles.” “These values, which are stated in our Code of Conduct form the basis of our ESG Plans and are reflected daily in our work.”

The ESG Report discusses Howmet Aerospace’s commitment to sustainable action to GHG emission reductions. It also sets a new target to achieve a 21.5 percent reduction of GHG emissions by 2024 based on projected sales volume. Howmet Aerospace identified and funded 100 projects that support this goal.

Mr. Plant stated, “We also have a team that is working on comprehensive plans to reduce our GHG emissions by 2030, bringing us closer to net zero in 2050.” These 2030 targets will be communicated as soon as possible once we are confident that they can be achieved.

The report was prepared in accordance with the core option from the 2020 GRI Standards as well as the standards of the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board. The 2021 ESG Report includes the following highlights:

  • A 6.2 percent decrease on GHG emissions, and 3.0% decline in energy use compared with 2020.

  • A total of 5.1 Million Howmet Aerospace BobTail locking bolts were used in North America and Europe to assemble windturbines. This is a 6 per cent increase over 2020 due to continued proliferation at top wind-turbine makers worldwide.

  • 62 million Howmet Aerospace BobTail locksbolts and 16 millions Howmet Aerospace BOM blindfasteners were used in the assembly of 5.6 gigawatts worth of solar arrays. They prevented 138,000 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide from being released over their 25-year lifespan.

  • The Howmet Aerospace Foundation has approved more than $4.7 Million in STEM-focused grants and supported organizations such as the Carnegie Science Center and the Pittsburgh Promise, Rainbow Railroad and Latino Health Access, Minority Veterans of America, Standup for the Cure, Standup for the Cure, and Latino Health Access.

  • Zero fatalities for contractors and employees.

  • A 8.3 percent decrease in days away, restricted, and transfer rate compared with 2020.

  • 81% of the Company’s key suppliers have sustainability programmes that are either active or leading.

  • Human Rights Campaign Foundation named Howmet Aerospace as one of the “Best Workplaces for LGBTQ Equality.”

  • 50/50 Women on Boards recognized the Company for having 40% of its Board made up of women.
