Human activities are threatening Tanzania’s Lake Victoria ecosystem

Tanzania's Lake Victoria environment threatened by human activities

Dodoma, February 10, (IANS)A minister from Tanzania told Parliament that Lake Victoria, the world’s second-largest freshwater lake, is under threat due to increased human activity and an increase in population.

Selemani Jufo, the Minister for State in the Vice Presidential’s Office responsible Environment, said that humans have been responsible for the destruction of the lake by dumping solid wastes from homes and industries, according to Xinhua news agency.

Jaffo informed the House in Dodoma that unsustainable agriculture, which causes water pollution, and improper use of pesticides, were all other human activities.

He pointed out the accusing finger at fishermen, manufacturers and residents who he claimed were responsible for the degrading of the environment around the lake.

He stated that the government was taking steps to protect the lake, including awareness campaigns and fighting illegal fishing.

Jaffo stated that the government has been changing laws and creating guidelines, regulations, and strategies to control pollution of the country’s great lakes.
