A protestor who is on his 10th day indefinite hunger strike at the Houses of Parliament claims he is doing this for his nieces and nephews to highlight the climate crisis. Angus Rose, 52 years old, refuses all food. He says he will continue to sit at the gates of Parliament every single day until the government gives him a press conference about the scale of climate emergency.

Angus, a London-based engineer in software, is asking Greg Hands, Minister of Energy, Clean Growth and Climate Change, for a commitment to host a briefing by Sir Patrick Vallance, the Chief Scientific Advisor. Angus, who has a sign reading ‘Uncle on Hunger Strike’, says he is doing it for his five nephews and niece, who he fears face an “apocalyptic future” unless the UK It drastically reduces its emissions now. He said MyLondonHe is willing to risk his life in order to fulfill this request.

He stated that he was a software engineer and deals with complex systems and logic in his day job. I can see that the climate system is in decline and that we must act now to drastically reduce emissions, so that we can limit the devastating effects of global warming.

Angus Rose has met dozens more politicians, including Ed Miliband (ex-Labour leader) who are all entering Parliament.

“If we carry on releasing emissions at the current rate, my nephews and niece will see food shortages, more and more extreme weather and the war and conflict that an unstable climate brings. Climate change was a major factor in the 2011 Syrian war and refugee crisis. This is just a glimpse of what lies ahead.

Boris Johnson received a briefing by Sir Patrick in 2020 on climate risk and solutions. Angus is demanding the government asks Sir Patrick and his team to brief the Cabinet and MPs, this time “out in the open” with a briefing televised to the public.

He added: “Decision makers need to understand the future that awaits us if we don’t act; the public needs access to the same scientific information that the government has. Climate change will have a devastating impact on every aspect of our life and threaten everything we hold dear in civilized society. It’s better for the uncle not to break than for the nephews or nieces to not have a future.

The South African-born activist is based in part on Guillermo Fernandez (senior father-of-3), who organized the ‘Papa on Hunger Strike in 2021. It lasted 39-days and ended with an agreement for the Swiss Parliament to receive a similar briefing by climate scientists. Outside Parliament, the hunger striker has met the Greens’ Caroline Lucas MP, Labour’s shadow climate minister Ed Miliband MP and Conservatives including Sir Bernard Jenkin MP. Minister Greg Hands MP was reached for comment. Angus stated that Mr Hands had already replied and declined to hold a briefing on climate change with MPs.
