COAL + ICEAsia Society’s immersive documentary photography exhibition, titled “The Climate Crisis”, brings together the work from more than 50 photographers around the globe to create a visual representation of the issue.
Magnum photographer Susan Meiselas co-curated with Jeroen de vries, the exhibition designer COAL + ICEThis photographic journey takes you from the coal mines to the melting glaciers in the Greater Himalayas and to other locations around the world where rising sea levels or extreme weather events can cause havoc. The featured imagery is a mix of glass plate negatives and smartphone videos, and spans over a century in technology. These photographs show our dependence on fossil fuels through intimate portraits and vastly altered landscapes.
Over the past decade, COAL + ICEtravelled around the globe, observing the effects of the climate crisis on the visuals. Asia SocietyIt is an honor to work with the Kennedy CenterThis show will be presented to Washington, DC for its East Coast premiere. It will run from March 15 through April 22, 2022. 48 projectors light the 30,000-square foot exhibition space at the REACH Plaza.
COAL + ICEThrough images, videos, and informative events, the climate change impacts on the environment and people are brought to life. A six-week-long programming series transforms the exhibition’s center into a stage that can be used for music, performance and panel discussions as well as art-making.
The exhibition is free and all programming is available with pre-registration.
COAL + ICEThe partnership includes a wide range of environmental, artistic, and service organizations who will present climate-related programs simultaneously to diverse local audiences. The Magnum Foundation and Dysturb will present #ReframeClimate. This public art campaign features large-scale, global images of climate change. It also includes an interactive element that allows viewers learn more about the story behind each image. Among others, Americans for the Arts and the Anacostia Community Museum, Hirshhorn Museum and the National Museum of Women in the Arts are also partners.
If you are not in the area, the COAL + ICE Climate “Posterator” is a globally accessible digital platform for creating original posters in response to the climate crisis. Make your own unique designYou can pair images from the exhibition with text that you can print or share online. Ten posters will be displayed in the exhibition. Each poster will be given $1,500.
