A key component of environmental legislation is failing protect threatened species from extinction, according to a new report by the Australian National Audit Office.
Yesterday’s auditor generals report found that the Environment Departments administration for threatened flora- and fauna under the umbrella of the Environment Protection Biodiversity and Conservation (EPBC Act)Inefficient and only partially effective. It is hampered in part by long delays and poor monitoring.
The act requires that the environment minister create a list of endangered species and communities. It also requires that conservation plans be made for these species, including recovery plans, which can be used to stop their decline, at the minister’s discretion.
