Student: Indigo Clark
School: Peninsula High School
Category: Academic Achievement
Indigo Clark celebrates the creative spirit of her in song and in painting. All through high school, choir was her favorite activity. It helped her increase her confidence and introduced her to many of her closest friends.
In addition to singing in the Peninsula High School Choir, Indigo has sang in the WMEA All-State (All-Northwest) and All-National honor choirs over the past three year.
Each year, you must audition for the honor chorus. Only nine students are chosen, she stated. It’s a great honor to be chosen.
Eden’s Garden
She also loves to draw and has a freelance business creating personal Dungeons & Dragons characters for her clients. Indigo, who was unable to attend school due to the COVID shutdown, used the extra time to create a webcomic called Edens Garden.
She said that it was a fantasy idea. It began as a novel idea for my own enjoyment. I was driven completely by my passion to tell stories. I posted it online and it quickly gained more than a thousand views and 64,000 subscribers. And it’s earned me many unexpected successes like profiting off of my freelance artwork. It’s something I am proud of, even though it wasn’t my best work.
She also uses her talents for illustrations for an independent German video game studio.
Indigo has taken 10 AP/Honors classes, and has a 3.99 GPA. Indigo ranks 21st in her class. She has been an AP scholar and was on the honor rolls in grades 9-11.
She is also Senior Senator for ASB, vice president of PHS Environmental Club, and has completed more than 10 hours of community service to recycle around the school. She also volunteers more than 30 hours at Winterfest.
Overcoming obstacles
She lost her father in her senior year, which was the most difficult thing she had ever to deal with in highschool. His passing completely changed her outlook and mindset.
She said that many of my high school struggles were short-term or had clear endings. I’ve struggled with anxiety and confidence, but forcing myself out of my comfort zone always helped tremendously. The complex emotions I’ve felt since he passed away have no clear solution the most I can do is just provide myself with grace and forgiveness.
Her family will be moving back to the Midwest this summer. Indigo will study graphic design at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the fall. She hopes to use her training and natural talent to design user-experience websites.
Molly Copeland, school counselor, has been impressed by Indigos compassion, talent and positive vision.
Copeland stated that our student body has been through many difficult years and that Indigo is one of the leaders who have helped to shape a positive future at school. She is a great learner who contributes fully to the campus community and makes student life better for her peers. She leaves a positive impression on PHS every day, making it a better place.
She is also one the most optimistic and resilient young adults that I have ever worked alongside. She has been through more loss and grief than many adults, but it is not with defeat. That is not how she presents herself. It is also not how her life is structured. Her ability to honor her father’s life by living her own life with compassion, courage, and grace is something I admire. She teaches us all about healing, strength, and hope by treating others with unconditional positivity and practicing genuine empathy for all. She is a shining light for us all.

Favorite teacherMr. Nugent Psychology 101. I have learned so much about psychology from him. He made it easy to understand psychological principles and taught me how to be a better person. His kindness and knowledge are admirable.
The best thing about PHS:The staff. Each one of them is very different and has so many knowledge to share. Our school is fortunate to have five amazing counselors. Without them, high school would have been much more difficult.
Advice for younger studentsAcademics are not your priority. They are important but not important enough to sacrifice your mental health, sanity, and sleep.
