Huawei, a Chinese firm, did not make it onto the Indian government’s trusted sources list for telecom equipment suppliers. Huawei on Tuesday stated that it is closely watching the policy environment in India as the market offers huge opportunities for growth.
Huawei has always had a long-term strategy for India, Jay Chen, vice-president of the Asia-Pacific region at Huawei, stated during a media roundtable that took place on the sidelines to the Mobile World Congress.
He stated that Huawei still believed India was a good market for it because of its huge demand and the potential for further growth. India is a huge market, not just for Huawei, but for all other players. This market is hugely potential and has a lot of potential to grow.
We are closely watching the India market with regard to policy, current environments, and developments,” Chen, who was the Indian market leader for Huawei, said.
Answering a question about the company’s plan to invest on the India market under its Spark program that was announced lastyear, Mr. Chen said, “This year, the programme will be extended to more countries in the region, and of course, India is also included under this programme. We hope to get more applications form start-ups in India.”
Huawei will invest $100 million over three years in the Asia-Pacific start-up community under the programme.
He said that the company is also working to develop ICT skills in India, so that it can contribute to the talent pool.
