Kottayam is an environmental expert from Kerala who has been appointed to lead a critical scientific body of the Government of India focusing on Antarctica.
According to an official announcement Dr C T Aravinda Kumar (pro-vice-Chancellor of the Mahatma Gandhi University in Kottayam) will now head the advisory panel that is responsible for carrying out an environmental assessment of Antarctica. She is also involved in protecting the icy continents’ nature.
The panel is part of the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research, which is managed by the Union Ministry of Earth Sciences.
The panel’s responsibilities include developing long-term plans for Antarctica, advising on how to implement them, purchasing equipment and issuing further instructions about how to use such devices.
