KUWAIT (KUNA), April 17, 2017 — Sunday’s announcement by the Environment Public Authority (EPA), stated that the recently launched plastic collection and recycling competition aimed to protect the environment and increase community awareness about environmental issues.
Sheikha Al Ibrahim, EPA director of media relations and public relations, stated to KUNA that the competition would take place annually in different parts of the country.
She said that the competition was organized by the authority in Mishrif, where more than 150 people participated and approximately 650 kilograms were collected for recycling.
She said that the first three winners were each awarded KD 500, 200, and 100. She added that plastic waste will be taken to recycling plants as soon possible in order to be disposed of safely.
Plastic was the main focus, as it is the most harmful pollutant to the environment. In the future, Al-Ibrahim stated that other wastes, such as oil, paper, and other hazardous substances, will be the focus.
She said that recycling will take place in Al-Salmi, and that there is a step to turn waste into energy. (end)
