Without pollinators, the country wouldn’t be able grow many of its fruits and vegetables. But the species that play this critical role are in trouble with declining numbers. One example is that half of the 27 bumblebee varieties are declining, and three of these bumblebee types are already extinct.
No Mow May in Lambeth, will see approximately 700,000.00 square metres of grass left to grow on our housing estates as part of the campaign organized by PlantlifeA British conservation charity. Their research shows that allowing grasses to grow naturally can produce up to ten times as much nectar for bees, and other pollinators.

A Lambeth Council spokesperson stated that they are committed to taking local actions to address the climate emergency, and to improving our local environment. The No Mow May campaign is a support for our wider efforts to address the issue at a moment when we are witnessing the collapse of the climate and ecological systems.

Lambeth Council also has stopped using glyphosate as a routine management tool for weeds on the streets of the boroughs. This was in response to growing environmental and health concerns. These pollinators are also being protected and the council’s decision to end the use of glyphosate reflects our commitment to them.
Lambeth established a partnership in March 2022 with some of the most influential public and private, voluntary, community and non-profit organizations in the borough to form the Climate Partnership Group. This group will work together to implement Lambeth’s ambitious Climate Action Plan.
The Climate Action Plan aims at making the borough carbon neutral and climate resilient by 2030. It will make it a greener and more equitable place to live and work. The Climate Partnership Group has eleven major local organizations.
The group will work with climate experts and community groups to implement the Climate Action Plan. It covers adaptation, buildings, energy, transport, food, biodiversity, environmental quality, and waste.
