Environment
The subject of environment is a branch in geography. It was first studied as part of that discipline. However, the prevailing environmental conditions have significantly influenced the evolution of the subject as a separate discipline.
1. Concepts related to the environment carbon footprint and bio reserve, global warming, and carbon cycle
2. Multilateral conventions on the environment signed on different environmental concerns
3. Government measures for conservation and protection of the environment include laws, schemes, programmes and projects.
4. The discovery and the extinction of species
5. Environmental studies surveys, reports, census

Candidates must pay attention to the following when considering the latest updates in Environment:
Conventions and summits:
1. Any new Indian convention that is signed for the purpose of the Convention
2. The venue of the summit (previous and present meeting venues), important decisions made or agreements signed at the summit; the date of the summit’s commencement, the purpose of summit, and the organization responsible for implementing the convention.
3. Any country that withdraws or joins a convention; the reason why

Example:The Convention on Biological Diversity, a multilateral treaty has three main goals.
a. The conservation of biological diversity
b. Sustainable use of its components
c. Fair and equitable sharing of genetic resource benefits

The convention was officially opened for signature at Rio de Janeiro’s Earth Summit on 5 June 1992. It entered into force on 29/12/93. The United States is currently the only UN member that has not ratified this convention. It has two supplementary agreement, the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety and Nagoya Protocol on Genetic Resources and Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits arising from their Utilization to Convention on Biological Diversity.

The Conferences of the Parties (COP) are the meetings of the participants to the convention. COP 1 was held at Nassau, Bahamas in 1994, and COP 15 in Kunming, China 2021. COP 15’s second session will take place in April 2022. COP 11 took place in Hyderabad in 2012.
