Liberals need to do more to protect Canadians and the environment from toxic substances « Canada’s NDP

Laurel Collins (NDP critic for environment) made the following statement regarding the newly-introduced Bill S-5

“Canadians are concerned about toxic chemicals in products they use and their impact on their health. They expect their government will take action to protect them against toxic substances and recognize that everyone has the right to a healthy, safe environment.

Liberals have made many empty claims about protecting the environment, and combating climate change. When it comes down to the matter, however, they fail to act.

We remain concerned about the Liberals’ commitment towards protecting the environment, just as with the previous iteration. The bill does not grant Canadians the right to a healthy and safe environment. It also contains significant loopholes that are concerning. We are also concerned about the possibility that this bill will allow the government to make politically motivated choices that ignore scientific evidence regarding dangerous substances. If we really want to protect our environment, we need to follow the advice and recommendations of scientists and environmental professionals, not those of big corporations.

The New Democrats will work to achieve results for Canadians by strengthening the bill and ensuring that Canadians enjoy safe products as well as a healthy environment for future generations.
