Toronto, Ontario, March 29, 20, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE). LifeLabs is proud announce that it has been awarded the Practice Greenhealth Environmental Excellence Award for the fourth consecutive year. LifeLabs was the only lab in North America to be awarded this award for its efforts in creating a more sustainable organization at its International Reference Lab, Toronto, Ontario and Burnaby Reference Lab, Burnaby, British Columbia.
Practice Greenhealth, a world-leading organization dedicated to sustainability in health care, is recognized as a leader. This award is part of the Environmental Excellence Awards, which are given each year to honor environmental achievements in the healthcare sector.
Charles Brown, President & CEO of LifeLabs, stated, “We were so happy to earn this award for an additional year; I am proud of our team’s efforts that have supported the goals of sustainability and reductions of environmental impacts.” LifeLabs believes that Canada should be healthier for future generations. This is why we strive to be more sustainable in our environment and to be leaders in sustainability in the health sector.
LifeLabs performs more that 120 million laboratory test every year. Clean water is essential for high quality diagnostic testing. It is an important part our commitment to our communities as well as our environment that we return clean, safe, and usable drinking water. In 2020, our Laboratory Operations, Facilities, and Environmental Sustainability Teams collaborated with AOI (Advanced Ozone Integration), water treatment experts to replace the ozone water treating system at our Burnaby Reference Lab. This unique system, which we invented, breaks down sodium azide and removes contaminants before the water is returned to the public.
This is the latest step in our ongoing efforts towards being more kind to the environment, reducing waste and supporting sustainability.
Additionally:
- We conduct annual energy audits and waste audits in order to stay on track. This helps us to continue to reduce our environmental footprint.
- We have developed extensive landfill waste diversion programs as well as employee electronic recycle programs.
- Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), a report we made for the last three year to better understand the overall effect of our business operations on the environment, social and economic indicators.
- To improve energy efficiency in Canada, we have transformed more than 2,200 fixtures into light-emitting diode technology (LED).
- For our mobile service fleet, we are using hybrid vehicles.
