Love Where You Live series: Connecting Staten Island community and the environment

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y — The Central Family Life Center is hosting its first Love Where You Live showcase series, consisting of events to promote a healthy connection between the community and the environment on Staten Island.

Out of this initiative, I want to see stronger community partnerships and meaningful ways for sustainability of beatification efforts in the Staten Island community, said Dr. Demetrius Carolina, executive director of the Central Family Life Center.

Love Where You Live, starting this month, will consist of four events: Open Mic Night, Art Showcase, Poetry Night and a Community Mural. Each event will take place at the Central Family Life Center in Stapleton, and will run from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The schedule is below:

— Open Mic Night: March 25

— Art Showcase: April 29

— Poetry Night: May 27

— Community Mural: June 24

The Love Where You Live initiative is about helping make the community clean, green and beautiful, said the Rev. Teddy Otobo-Sheriff, a pastor at Richmond Christian Church in West Brighton who has been working on the initiative.

The series, focused on underrepresented and underserved communities on the North Shore, is free and open to the public.

We want to create lasting change by first making people more conscious, Carolina explained.

The Central Family Life Center, founded in 1991, is a community center that houses social services programs for Staten Islands diverse residents to empower their health, education and well-being.
