Double majoring in environmental and sustainability studies and policy studies, Madeleine Poulin ’22 was deeply involved with operations at Loy Farm as an intern there.
Poulin is a member both of the Pi Sigma Alpha sorority and political honor society, Alpha Xi Delta.
How did you choose your majors and how did you do it?
I am passionate about sustainable agriculture, and the work that can been done to advocate for political sustainable food production.
Did you have a close relationship with faculty or staff at Elon?
During my internship at Loy Farm I was able to work closely with Jacob Rutz and Michael Strickland as well as Taylor Black, Loy Farm Manager. Their expertise and support allowed me to gain hands-on experience in sustainable agriculture at Loy Farm as well as the Elon Community Garden. Their work has allowed me to develop my passion for, knowledge, and skill set in organic farming. My mentors and professors made my Loy Farm internship one of my most memorable learning experiences.
What are your plans for after graduation?
I am currently applying for jobs that will allow my to start a career in agricultural and food policy.
What other experiences were valuable in preparing for your success?
I was a student worker for the Club Sports Department of Campus Recreation and Wellness. Through my on-campus employment, I was able to get many leadership opportunities, including as the Club Sport Team Leader. This position allowed me to gain professional experience that prepared me for my post-graduate career.
What advice would first-year students at Elon have you given?
Don’t be afraid of trying new things and joining new types of organizations in your first semester.
