Kochi: The SilverLine project will have an evident and indirect impact on the environment, according to Professor Madhav Gadgil, a well-respected Indian ecoologist.

“Poor people will have the consequences of all this. The voices of protest raised by people will not be in vain, he said while attending a program online at Maharaja’s College in Ernakulam.

Dr V S Vijayan, former chairperson of Kerala State Biodiversity Board stated that there would be a loss Rs 28 lakh due to the project’s impact on water bodies. When a hectare is lost to a water body, it is estimated that Rs 985,000 will be lost. He claimed that he had written to the Chief Minister describing the facts. But there has been no reply from the government’s end so far.

Congress, its affiliated organisations, and BJP have intensified protests across the state against SilverLine and the dream project of LDF government.

On the other day, CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has reiterated the party’s stand to continue with the K-Rail project. He declared that those who oppose the project can’t interrupt it by removing the survey stones.

K-Rail MD Ajith Kumar stated Monday that the state will proceed with the social impacts survey despite protests against semi-high-speed railway project.
