Mama Mabira Eyes top UN Environment Job

Beatrice Atim Anwyar has been a contender for the United Nations Environment Assembly UNEA presidency in 2007 after earning the nickname Mama Mabira from her brave protest against the giveaway of a portion of Mabira Forest Limited SCOUL to Sugar Corporation Uganda Limited SCOUL.

The 6th session will be held in Nairobi, Kenya, on March 2, 2022. It is the world’s highest-ranking decision-making forum on the environment. It includes universal membership from all 193 UN Member states.

The Assembly is held every two years. It involves all major environmental groups and stakeholders around the globe.

H.E. Sveinung Rotevatn (Minister of Environment and Climate of Norway) is the current president of assembly.

Anywar, who is Minister of State For Water and Environment, lobbyed Parliamentarians on Wednesday to support Uganda’s bid to be the top position in the forthcoming elections to be held between February 28 and March 2 in Nairobi.

After the resignation of Malawi, Anywar will be facing two rivals from Algeria and Morocco.

She first presented the idea to the Committee of Parliament on National Economy, chaired Friday by Robert Migadde (Buvuma County MP).

Anwyar once again presented her bid to Parliament during plenary on Wednesday and rallied the House towards the appropriate funding of Uganda’s proposal to the top seat.

She explained that the country can reap immense benefits, not only from the promotion and growth of the tourism sector in UN member states, but also from a rise in its global profile.

She explained that the presidency of UNEA is a key position Uganda should aspire to. Because Uganda will be the global torchbear for sustainable development and greening the global economy, our international profile and image will improve.

She said that the UNEA presidency will increase Uganda’s leadership on environmental diplomacy and her access to the global process for decision-making on issues related Environment and Development.

Anywar explained that Uganda is home to 1.4 million refugees, making it the second largest host country in the world. He added that the presidency will allow the country access to the UNEA platform for sustainable environmental management.

Among, Deputy Speaker, assured Anywar of Parliaments support to help her country mount the top seat at UNEA. Anywar was given the task of presenting the budget to Parliament for discussion. URN
