Environment Canada warns Manitobans that heavy snowfall is expected to hit the province over the next week.
The weather agency issued a Sunday forecast Statement on special weatherFor several parts of Manitoba, including Winnipeg and Brandon. The statement warns that the southern Manitoba will be impacted by heavy snow, strong winds, and blowing snow starting Tuesday night.
Environment Canada reports that a Colorado low will move towards Minnesota on Tuesday. This will bring heavy winter snow from southeastern Saskatchewan and southern Manitoba.
The weather agency says that North Dakota is likely to be hit with the most snow. However Manitobans should still be prepared for large accumulations near the international boundary.
Snowfall amounts near the U.S. Border could reach 60cm, while communities north could receive 20 to 40cm or more.
Environment Canada explained that strong winds are expected to develop as the Colorado low moves towards east Minnesota on Wednesday. The weather agency predicts winds between 60 and 70 km/h Wednesday night and Thursday morning, with stronger winds in the Red River Valley at 80 km/h.
Poor visibility will result from strong winds and heavy snow. Environment Canada states that it is possible for Manitoba’s to experience blowing ice on Wednesday, but more likely Wednesday night and Thursday. The blowing snow can cause dangerous travel conditions.
According to the weather agency, weather conditions will improve by Friday.
Environment Canada states that the track of the Colorado low is improving but is still uncertain. A deviation in the track could cause changes in snow accumulations, precipitation types, and wind speeds.
