Maryland Gubernatorial Candidates Discuss Environment at Forum in College Park

Ten Maryland gubernatorial hopefuls spoke about the environment Tuesday at a candidate forum at the University of Maryland in College Park.

Each person spoke out about their plans to improve the environment. Meanwhile, state legislators continue to debate comprehensive legislation. This includes net-zero greenhouse gases emissions by 2045, a reduction of statewide greenhouse gases by 60% by 2030, and new construction of buildings that use electricity for hearing and hotwater instead of natural gas.

Maryland LCV uses education and political action to fight for clean water, healthy air, and resilient community for all Marylanders. Kim Coble is the executive director of the Maryland League of Conservation Voters as well as the Education Fund.

Along with Maryland Matters, the league sponsored Tuesday’s forum. A similar forum, also focusing upon the environment, was held Wednesday at Goucher College (Towson).

Tuesdays ForumThe event featured eight Democrats and one Republican.

The Democrats were Jon Baron, a former nonprofit executive; Doug Gansler was the former Maryland Attorney-General; Ashwani Jain, a former President Barack Obama administration official and U.S. Education secretary John King Jr.; author and ex-nonprofit executive Wes Moore; Laura Neuman, former Anne Arundel County executive; Tom Perez, former Democratic National Committee chair; Jerome Segal who founded the former Bread & Roses Party.

Former state Del. and perennial candidate Robin Ficker, Montgomery County, was the only Republican present.

The top 10 were completed by David Lashar, a Libertarian candidate from Annapolis.

The debates were not attended by four candidates, including former Maryland Commerce Secretary Kelly Schulz and Del. Daniel Cox, who represents parts of Carroll and Frederick counties.

Two Democratic candidates didn’t appear in the race are Rushern L. Baker III, ex-executive of Prince Georges County, and Peter Franchot (state Comptroller).

Maryland Democratic Party will host its second Burgers and Brews gubernatorial candidate forum Tuesday in Frederick, focusing on transportation. You can attend in person for some people, but you are also welcome to attend via the internet. RegisterYou can view it online.
