Mayor London Breed appoints Tyrone Jue as the new acting director of the Department of the Environment

San Francisco, CAToday, Mayor London N. Breed declared that Tyrone Jue would be the new Acting Chief of the San Francisco Department of the Environment. Jue was previously the Assistant Deputy General Manager at San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, and the Mayor’s Environmental Policy Advisor. He is currently the Mayor’s appointee to the Bay Area Air Quality Management District Board of Directors.

San Francisco has been a national leader in climate change and sustainability policies. Mayor Breed said that Tyrone will continue to lead the Department of the Environment in this critical mission. Tyrone has been a tireless worker to advance environmental justice policies, improve airquality in the Bay Area communities that are least served, and implement CleanPowerSF as well as other clean energy initiatives.

Jue will replace Debbie Raphael who has resigned after eight years. The San Francisco Department of the Environment has contributed to reducing San Francisco’s greenhouse gas emissions by more than 40%. It has also developed an ambitious Climate Action Plan that is centered on equity and has over 150 recommendations. It has also expanded a robust system of recycling and composting to help the City reach its zero waste goals.

Mayor Breed expressed gratitude to Debbie for her many years of service in fighting for climate justice for the City. Under her leadership, the Department developed significant policies to improve the environment. This culminated in the recent publication of our ambitious update on our Climate Action Plan. Although this work was important, the Controller and City Attorney raised concerns about the Department. The Department is in need of new leadership. This will allow us continue the important work that Debbie started.
