Neth Pheaktra Secretary of State, Environment Ministry said that government encouraged youths to take part in environmental protection, conservation, and forest protection without political influence.
Yesterday, he stated that he welcomes young people’s participation in protecting the environment. However, they must be honest about it and adhere to the laws.
He said that they shouldn’t be under the control politicians who are trying to gain political leverage.
He stated that the ministry is open to all criticisms that help improve, but it does not accept political criticisms that are meant to denigrate the government.
Pheaktra stated conservation of forests and wildlife is not for independent NGOs, associations.
He added that the government has made efforts at all levels of education regarding forest conservation and protection, including at the international, national, and local level.
He said that sustainable forest management is key to combating the effects of climate change and that resource utilisation is crucial to ensure the well-being and prosperity of current and future generations.
Chin Sonita, a team leader with Young Earth who works towards protection and promotion of the environment said that youth participation starts at the individual level – from cleanliness, water and electricity consumption and planting trees at home and in their community.
She said that environmental protection is a positive influence on youth’s behaviour and attitudes. It also helps to instill responsibility in their families and communities for protecting the environment and natural resources.
Economic growth and environmental performance go hand-in-hand. She added that the protection of nature and the environment is essential to socio-economic development, sustainable growth, and providing the resources necessary to produce goods and services, as well as jobs.
Heng Kimhong is the Head of Research and Advocacy Program at Cambodian Youth Network Association. He said that Cambodia has a policy framework that encourages participation by the public and local communities in forest protection and conservation.
He said that authorities have restricted some communities because they spread information about forest crime and the effectiveness of officials in protecting Cambodia’s natural resources and forests.
He said that to promote the right to free participation in sustainable forests, government should mobilize people, communities, and youth to help protect forests, natural resources, from deforestation, and illegal exploitation.
He also asked the Ministry of Environment to grant him the right to participate and protect forests and other natural resources.
