A company that buys used cars and sells or recyles its parts has settled for $2.5 million over allegations of illegal disposal and stormwater pollution. This includes Contra Costa and Alameda counties.
Pick-N-Pull reached a settlement with 14 California district attorney’s offices and immediately improved their practices, according a statement from Diana Becton, Contra Costa County District Attorney.
The company has 21 facilities in Northern California. They buy older vehicles, sell their parts, and recycle the remaining steel. Schnitzer Steel, Inc. owns Pick-N-Pull.
Following unannounced inspections of the company’s facilities in the state, it was discovered that the company routinely and illegally disposed of automotive fluids, aerosols and batteries.
Becton said that it was a priority to protect the environment and waterways from harmful pollutants. He praised the company for their response. Pick-N-Pull quickly implemented new procedures and practices in hazardous waste disposal after being contacted by prosecutors.
