Today, members from the National Green Tribunal (NGT), monitoring committee, stated that the model district environmental plan should be implemented according to the NGT guidelines. Today, members of the NGT monitoring committee, including Jasbir Singh (chairman), a former judge in Punjab and Haryana, and Balbir Singh Seechewal (environmentalist), visited here to assess the situation.
Justice Jasbir Singh met with Prof Adarsh Pal Wig (PPCB chairman), Deputy Commissioner Patiala Sandeep Hans (MC Commissioner KeshavHingonia, and other members. He stated that the deadline for the implementation of the NGT guidelines for managing legacy and new waste was already past. “Now, we will initiate action, including setting responsibilities and issuing fines against municipal councils and other departments in case they fail to implement the solid waste management rules-2016”, he said. Justice Jasbir Singh stated that the respective departments were responsible for implementing proper disposal of animal carcasses and the establishment of green belts around dumps.
He recommended that people ensure that they don’t dispose of trash in cities and villages, and that they keep them clean. The monitoring committee emphasized the need to handle plastic and electronic waste according to guidelines, so that untreated waste is not dumped into drains and the Ghaggar river.
