Hyderabad: Tuesday saw a National Green Tribunal judge hear a plea regarding construction of the Telangana Secretariat in Hyderabad. He also took up the Union ministry for environment, forest, and climate change to protest the lack of a counter.
Lawyer Sravan claimed that the NGTs Chennai court imposed a $10,000 fine on the ministry because it was quiet for two years.
NGT directed the Centre that it file the counter explaining its position by March 15. NGT directed the Centre to file the counter explaining their stand by March 15. NGT stated that if the ministry continues to ponder the case, it would direct the joint secretary to appear before them.
Revanth Reddy, chief of Telangana Congress, had filed a NGT application to stop demolition of the old secretariat without environmental clearance.
On Tuesday, the case was heard before the NGT bench under Justice K Ramakrishnan. Dr K Satyagopal, an expert member, heard it.
Shravan Kumar, Revanth’s lawyer, stated that the Telangana High Court had been misled by the environment department by providing misinformation.
The central environment ministry must give clearance as the secretariat building is situated next to Hussain Sagar (a water body). Sravan Kumar said that it is illegal to obtain clearance from a state-level environmental impact assessment authority.
The NGT bench expressed dismay at the issue and directed all parties that they prepare for arguments by the next hearing date on March 15.
