OKLAHOMA CITY. April 29, 2022 (GLOBE NewSWIRE) — Friday, April 22, was Earth Day. This Earth Day, a veteran-owned, non-profit company that focuses on conserving and improving the nation’s lands by plugging old oil wells was launched. Environmental Innovators of Americahttps://www.environmentalinnovatorsofamerica.org, a Oklahoma City-based company was founded by Tiger Oil Co. and Major Ed Pulido of John Daly-Major Ed Heart of a Lion Foundation. This non-profit is determined to help the environment by helping to accelerate the retirement of abandoned oil wells orphaned by raising money for plugging operations.

Grant Cooke, president of the Oil Wells Association, stated that abandoned oil wells are a serious problem. “Orphaned wells pose a serious environmental risk. They are a ticking bomb that is ready to explode.” They emit methane gas, which contributes towards climate change. They become pathways for oil, natural gas, or briny waters to migrate into groundwater, soil, which can have a negative impact on agriculture and ranching.

The Environmental Protection Agency states that 280,000 metric tons (or more) of methane is released each year by unplugged wells. Experts, however, have found much higher levels. https://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/forgotten-oil-gas-wells-linger-leaking-toxic-chemicals-79142639). According to the EPA, there are more than 2 million unplugged, inactive, orphaned wells in the U.S. This equates to 7-20,000,000 metric tons per year. The cost of plugging a well is between $25,000 and $75,000, so this issue is extremely important. Cooke says that this nonprofit offers an opportunity for professionals in the oil and gas industry to make a difference.

The U.S. has a long tradition of using oil and natural gas. The economy and culture are driven by hydrocarbons. Cooke said, “Helping this nation clean up abandoned wells will be good for the sector.” “And by hiring veterans we can do something positive for those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for freedom.”

The company contributes a portion of its revenues to Heart of the Lion, Folds of Honor and other veteran groups.
