OADC Launches First Large-Scale Open-Access, Edge DC Environment in Africa

OADC Rolls Out First Large-Scale, Open-Access, Edge DC Environment in Africa
  • Core-to-edge architecture consolidates edge computing and edge data centres within a single ecosystem called OADC Edge.
  • Supports 5G rollout of Internet Service Provider (ISP), and expansion of fibre operator infrastructure to new locations
  • This technology supports the deployment of low-latency apps and extends data storage and processing to the network edge.

Mauritius Open Access Data Centres (OADC), Africa’s leading edge data centre provider, today announced the deployment of OADC Edge in South Africa, Africa’s first large-scale open-access edge data center environment. This is the first of a wider rollout for OADC Edge across Africa. Nigeria is expected to follow this year.

OADC creates an edge environment by consolidating edge computing and edge data centres within a single ecosystem. This helps clients realize their business potential. 5G operators, ISPs, and fibre providers who want to expand their network reach into new markets need to be able to locate equipment at remote locations. The ability to serve content locally improves the end-user experience. This is crucial for the successful rollout new, time-critical applications. It also allows for faster processing of large volumes of critical data before being forwarded to larger facilities in the region. This increases efficiency and reduces backhaul costs.

Bob Wright, Chief Technical Officer of OADC (pictured below), explains that Africa has seen a lot of investment in hyperscale data centers that are focused on Africa’s largest metropolitan areas in recent years. But a single location in a data centre is not enough to address a country. 5G operators and ISPs are looking for cost-effective methods to expand network reach to new markets. They require network equipment to be securely stored in remote locations.

Wright said: While content availability and processing of ever-greater amounts of data is a growing concern, core-to-edge architecture is required. This architecture will include meshed local and regional data centers that are fully connected to Africa’s network infrastructure in multiple countries and cities. OADC is building Africas edge data centre infrastructure to support clients seeking cost-effective network extension, and those who are changing their infrastructure deployment strategies to fulfil demand for content closer to the network edge – for improved availability and premium performance – or to optimise networking and storage costs by pre-processing data locally.

Integral to OADCs core-to-edge, open-access, edge data centre offering is the establishment of new, regional data centres covering major cities – initially across South Africa – and rollout of over 100, 0.5 MW OADC Edge data centres, in the largest deployment of open-access data centres on the continent.

South Africa’s first 17 OADC Edge data centers are now live. They offer colocation, rooftop access, and high-speed interconnectivity between facilities at 100Gbps and multiple routes for diversity. Sites are fully monitored by the 24/7/365 Network Operation Centre, (NOC), which provides clients with the security they require and the assurance they deserve. The rollout of key connectivity hubs continues, with new Tier-III regional OADC facilities, 2 to 3MW, coming online in Q3 2022, and more than 100 OADC Edge Data Centres expected to be available by the end 2022.
