OSWEGO, IL Although masks are still strongly recommended, Oswego School District 308 has removed the requirement for students, teachers, and staff to wear them starting February 17.
John Sparlin, Superintendent of Schools, stated that the significant decision was made due to the fact that the virus’ severity has declined, positivity rates have dropped, and that “more is known about the masks.”
Sparlin announced February 16 that buses and driver education cars are exempt from the new rule, except where a face mask exemption is in effect.
The message stated that “A large part our commitment to having safe places for students to learn” and stressed the importance of maintaining a respectful environment. “All students and staff must feel accepted, regardless of whether they choose to wear a mask.”
Sparlin continued: “Our community isn’t all in agreement about whether wearing a face mask is best. But we need to be united in our message that bullying and harassing students, staff, and the community at large is not in our best interests. It is time to unite and move forward in our mission to educate students and help them reach their full potential. Students should encourage their teachers, building administrators, and other trusted adults to raise any concerns so that they can be addressed.
Masks are optional for people who have been in close contact with COVID-19, but do not have symptoms. They are not required to quarantine unless directed by the local health department. Sparlin also stated that testing is still highly recommended, but not necessary, after being exposed.
Sparlin wrote that “Returning from school after a COVID-19-infected infection requires wearing a mask for five days. Alternately, you can complete a full 10 day isolation and return to school with no restrictions.”
District officials stated they will continue to monitor the cases “based on our own trend within student and employee COVID-19 case information.”
