Panchkula, 25 April

Hurdles in setting up the proposed solid waste disposal plant at Jhuriwala have been removed as the Union Environment Ministry had promised the local Municipal Corporation that it would give it the environment clearance soon.

Gyan Chand Gupta, Assembly Speaker, stated that he met with Mayor KulbhushanGoyal and Union Forest, Environment and Climate Change minister Bhupendra Yadav to get clearance for the establishment of a solid waste disposal facility with a minimum capacity 2,000 tonnes at Jhuriwala village. He said that in 2013, the Environment Department granted permission to this plant for seven years. In 2020, the MC needed to apply again to the ministry for clearance. However, it was unable to do so due to the Covid epidemic. He stated that the MC was now active again to establish the solid waste management facility after the decrease in Covid cases.

Gupta had been meeting regularly with MC officials, who informed him that the Union Ministry for Environmental had retained the clearance file. Yadav was also present when he and Gupta discussed the matter. The minister assured them that Panchkula’s solid waste disposal facility would be set up. He also instructed the officers. —
