PhD position in Indoor Environment Quality, Ventilation, and Occupational Health at NORWEGIAN UNIVERSITY of SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY – NTNU

About the position

The Department of Energy and Process Engineering offers a 3-year position for a PhD student in indoor air quality, ventilation and occupational hygiene using experimental measurements and machinelearning.

The position is subject to financial support by the Norwegian research council (NRC), Innovasjonsprosjekt i offentlig program. The project’s title is DIGG-MINSKOLE project- Transformerende Samspill mellom Digitale Teknologier og Mennesker for Brekraftig Innklima i Skler (project number 331830).

For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree.

The Department of Energy and Process Engineering is seeking a PhD candidate to conduct a research project in the area of long-term monitoring of indoor air quality and energy performance with advanced building envelopes.

As a PhD candidate, the position is fixed-term.  A PhD Candidate position requires that you have completed a doctoral education and obtained a doctoral degree. This requires high levels of research-based competence. The position will be available between April 2022 – June 2022. The Sustainable Energy Systems research group of EPT will oversee the position.

Professor Terese Vs. is the Head of Department. The supervisors of NTNU, Norwegian Institute for Air Research NILU, and Prof. Guangyu Kao will supervise the PhD candidate. They include Prof. Hans Martin Mathisen (supervisor), Prof. Zhirong Yan, and Dr. Stefan Jetschny. During the project, the candidate must stay at least one (1) year at NTNU in Trondheim as well as at least one (1) year at NILU Kjeller near Lillestrm.

Background

A school’s indoor environment has a significant impact both on student learning outcomes and the health and well being of staff. Good maintenance of the building and  operation of the technical facilities is important to achieve a good indoor climate. Employees and students must use school buildings properly and be involved in the maintenance and operation of school buildings. This requires that both students and staff are aware of how their behaviour affects the indoor climate. It also requires that they know how to contribute to maintaining a healthy indoor environment at school. The data from indoor environment sensors can be combined with information about how students and employees experience indoor environments and related health problems to identify indoor environment problems and determine the causes and take the appropriate measures. This will allow for new opportunities to engage and involve school users. Although schools have sensors that monitor the indoor environment, they do not have tools to gather data about users’ experiences in real time. Schools have limited access to data from the integrated sensors. Today, there is no information about the connections between sensor data with user experiences. DIGG-MINSKOLE is leveraging the large investment in technical facilities at schools to connect data from these with data about user experiences. We will develop a tool to increase user involvement in indoor environmental work at school. This will also allow for greater knowledge in HSE/internal control.

The duties of the position

This project aims to develop machine learning algorithms that can estimate the likelihood of well-being and health effects of indoor environment parameters. It also identifies targeted mitigation measures at school level. This PhD project will use machine learning to combine measurement data from the indoor environment and user experience to develop an innovative method to identify indoor environment problems.

The research activities of the DIGG-MINSCHOOL research project will be the primary focus of the PhD candidate. Here are some examples of the tasks and duties that this PhD research will require.

  •  to collect user experience data and building system information at selected schools
  •  to develop a new approach to measure indoor environment parameters at room level with different sensors
  •  to develop machine learning algorithms which should be able to estimate the probability of well-being / health effect of indoor   environment parameters
  •  to identify targeted mitigating measures at classroom level
  •  to utilize existing and new technology to contribute to increased knowledge, awareness, role understanding and action competence in indoor environment and HSE at school level
  • to cooperate with other research groups at partner universities/research institutes
