Plastic Pollution and Green Economy on Agenda of Un Environment Assembly 5.2

The fifth session, UNEA-5.2, of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-52) will take place at Nairobi between February 28 and March 2.

The UNEA5.2 will be considering draft resolutions on a number of topics, including marine/plastic litter, Nature based solutions, biodiversity, chemicals and mineral, green recovery and circular economics.

Many countries have submitted drafts of resolutions and resolutions to address environmental issues all over the globe.

Here are the top agendas that will likely be discussed:

The theme for UNEA 5s is Strengthening Actions for Nature, to Achieve Sustainable Development Goals. The theme calls to take more ambitious and serious action to preserve and restore Nature. It seeks Nature-based solutions to help achieve sustainable development goals in all three dimensions (economic, social, and environmental).

The UNEA-5 focuses on the fact that humanity should collectively possess the knowledge, technology and resources to preserve and restore our natural environment. It promotes a transition to a Nature positive future that will benefit both our health and our economies.

The UNEA-5 is also an opportunity for ambitious action to establish the UN Decade for Ecosystem Restoration.

In the wake of UNEA-5.2, momentum has been building towards addressing plastic pollution around the world.

Since its inception, UNEA has been focusing attention on plastic waste, marine plastic debris, and micro-plastic. The upcoming UNEA 5.2 provides a great opportunity for the entire world to agree to the global plastics treaty. It also places accountability on the right parties through proper use and legal tools.

The greatest hope for civil society is that UNEA-5 can deliver plastic solution with very concrete results. We hope to continue the momentum towards UNEA-5, which will adopt a mandate to begin negotiations for a legally binding instrument to tackle plastic pollution.

The world’s attention has now shifted to the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. For the future of our planet, both national and international recovery plans will be crucial. There are many opportunities to accelerate the transition toward a more sustainable, greener future.

UNEA-5 provides the opportunity for member countries and other stakeholders to take bold steps towards a better, greener future. The UNEA aims at directing the conversation towards investments in economic recovery following the COVID-19 pandemic, which contribute to sustainable development.
