(profile) Climate change expert and polluting expert is tapped to be environment minister

SEOUL, 13 April (Yonhap). — Han Wha-jin is a nominee for Environment Minister. He is an honorary researcher at the Korea Environment Institute. Han Wha-jin is a former scientist who has extensive experience in the fields of climate change and air pollution.

Han was born in 1959. After completing her undergraduate and graduate chemistry studies at Korea University, she went on to earn her doctorate in research on ozone generation from the University of California in Los Angeles.

Han was a founding member and researcher at the Korea Environment Institute for 23 years. She was also Cheong Wa Dae’s presidential secretary for the environment during the Lee Myungbak government, between 2009 and 2010.

Han later served as a member in the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission and Green Growth Committee of the Prime Minister’s Office. She was also the Korea Foundation for Women in Science Engineering and Technology’s head from 2016 to 2019.
