Punctured diesel tank causes large fuel spill, environmental hazard

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV). The Madison Fire Department Hazardous Incident Team accompanied by other agencies responded to a fuel leak Saturday afternoon.

Crews responded to a call from the 3700 block Commercial Ave. at 1:39 p.m. on Saturday, after the semi-truck’s diesel tank was punctured.

Initial crews discovered a large leak from the fuel tank of one semi. According to MFD, the semi was parked on a street near a sewer drain.

MFD states that the driver tried to prevent the sewer drain by placing cab seats cushions in front of it. However, this did not work.

It was estimated that approximately 150-170 gallons worth of fuel went into the sewer.

To make a dike, firefighters laid Oil Dry on the sewer drain. They also placed a catch basin beneath the fuel tank.

MFD reported that an additional 10-15 gallons fuel was also found in the basin.

Madison Water Utility, City of Madison Engineering Division, and MFD HIT responded to the scene to determine sewer drainage routes and identify where fuel traveled when it entered the sewer system. They also began remediation efforts.

Officials from the city notified the Wisconsin DNR about their findings. A private cleanup company also responded.

According to MFD the semi-disabled semi was towed as part of cleanup efforts.
