Qatar attends the 5th UN Environment Assembly

H.E. Sheikh Dr. Faleh bin Ahmed bin Ali Al Thani, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, with Inger Andersen, Executive Director of UN Environment Program.

Doha: Qatar participated in the 5th session of United Nations Environment Assembly’s (UNEA 5.2) in-person session and in the commemoration of Nairobi’s 50th anniversary of its establishment.

The delegation of Qatar headed by H.E. Sheikh Dr. Faleh Bin Nasser bin Ahmed Bin Ali Al Thani was chaired by the Minister of Environment and Climate Change.

The Minister of Environment and Climate Change met with Ali Salajegheh (Assistant to the President of Iran) and a number of Their Excellencies, ministers responsible for climate change and environment affairs in the UN Environment Programme member states. The ministers from the environment fields discussed ways to partner and cooperate with Qatar.

Dr. Faleh bin Ahmad bin Ali Al Thani, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, also met with Inger Andersen (Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme). They discussed Qatar’s priorities and environment strategy, as well as joint projects.

The Minister was present at the meeting of Arab ministers responsible in environmental affairs on the sidelines commemoration 50 years since the establishment of United Nations Environment Programme.

H E Jabor Ali Al Dosari, Ambassador of Qatar to the Republic of Nairobi, delivered the State of Qatar speech at the celebration. He praised the achievements of the UN Environment Programme over five decades and its efforts in persevering, sustaining the environment, as well as facing all environmental challenges. He hoped to see more achievements in environmental management at global level.

The Ambassador highlighted Qatar’s recently launched National Environment and Climate Change Strategy and Qatar National Climate Change Action Plan. These plans will chart the next chapter of Qatar’s environmental journey and help it achieve its goals for sustainable development projects and preserving the environment.

He stated that Qatar had been trying to create solid foundations for cooperation, and to play a active role at international level. This would embody principles of cooperation in global environmental action. The State’s National Vision 2030 is the main basis of its development strategies.

The Ambassador stressed that Qatar’s belief in the shared responsibility of achieving environmental sustainability will ensure that it continues to fulfill all its commitments and support any regional and international efforts to address the environmental dangers and challenges.

He stated that the 50th anniversary for the creation of the United Nations Environment Programme is an opportunity to highlight the program’s achievements over the past decade. The programme has put in a lot of effort to create tools, mechanisms, agreements, and other means that would help achieve the program’s goals. This includes ensuring that environmental development is integrated with economic, social, and human development. HE the Ambassador emphasized the strong relationships that unify Qatar and the United Nations Environment Programme in different areas related to environment affairs.
