Recycled materials are used to create art in a 9-month-old garden exhibit

LA CAADA FLINTRIDGE (Calif.)  You will find a colorful object so unusual that it is almost impossible to believe you are seeing it when you enter Descanso Gardens.

This is at most what it should be. Your (Un)Natural GardenArtist Adam Schwerner hopes.

What You Need to Know

  • Descanso Gardens’ longest exhibit is Your (Un)Natural Garden
  • The exhibit runs April 16 through Jan. 8
  • The exhibit uses recycled materials to create art
  • The exhibit can be viewed indoors and outdoors in the garden.

This exhibition isn’t about distance. Schwerner stated that this exhibition is not about distance.

These sculptures are known as snake ways because they line the snake-like path at Descanso Gardens. They were erected to display the contrast between the natural vegetation and man-made vibrant objects.

They are also made of materials from the Irvine recycling center.

I used to walk around the yard and saw these huge piles full of this waste wood. I knew I had to do something about it. Schwerner also stated that this is an interesting commentary on the amount of waste we produce.

The nine-month-old Descanso exhibit is the longest in history and opens just in Time for Earth Day.

Visitors can see how materials are repurposed from the outside sculptures to the indoor rooms in the gallery and historic house, which runs from April 16 through Jan 8.

Jennifer Errico, Descanso Gardens’ marketing manager, said that the exhibit gives visitors a new way to interact in the garden.

These are colors you won’t find in the garden. It’s almost like an exhibition of flowers, plants, and trees. Errico explained that it is Your Unnatural Garden.

It took 20 people to put together the exhibit. Schwerner hopes that it will help people connect with each other.

Schwerner stated that if you have some fun stuff, you might be able to have a civil and respectful conversation and learn from each other.

They are using interactive art to remind people what they use and inspire them reuse.
