Renesas Launches Virtual Development Environment for Fast Automotive Application Software Development and Evaluation

Customers are able to bring cutting-edge software to the new environment Quickly Market

TOKYO, Japan. April 12, 2022–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Renesas Electronics Corporation (TSE:6723), a premier supplier of advanced semiconductor solutions, today announced the launch of a virtual development environment that enables advance development and operational evaluation of automotive application software to support the latest requirements of electrical/electronic architecture (E/E architecture). The environment features a Virtual Turnkey Platform that allows engineers to create application software before evaluation boards or devices are available. The environment also includes a Multicore Debugger and Trace Tool that allows users to evaluate and analyze the operation of their software on a real chip. These tools will help customers get to market faster and kick-start development.

“With the evolution E/E architecture, there has been an increase in demand for software design that maximizes system performance. Software development has become a huge challenge due to the increasing cost and time involved. Hiroshi Kawaguchi Vice President, Automotive Software Development Division, Renesas“Our integrated development environment for software can be used across gateways systems, ADAS and xEV. Customers can benefit from the scalability and reliability of Renesas products like R-Car or the RH850 family, which are both useful for software and hardware development.”

Software is becoming a crucial part of automobiles. Customers’ software gets more complex. Customers are seeking new development environments and methods to improve the quality of their software.

“Virtual Turnkey Platform” Application Software Development Environment

This platform includes the R-Car Virtual Platform, (R-Car VPF), development environment and a Software Development Kit (R-Car SDK), which includes pre-tested software libraries as well as sample code. R-Car Virtual Platform (R-Car VPF) is based on Virtualizer Development KitsSynopsys Virtual Development Kits (VDKs), which integrate virtual models of intellectual Property (IP) specific for R-Car, to tailor for R-Car devices. This platform overlays the R-Car SDK, allowing engineers to instantly start developing application software virtually. The platform accurately reproduces the chip’s behavior and eliminates the need for a physical evaluation board to create a development environment. Multiple users can simultaneously develop software on separate servers or PCs.

Multicore Debug and trace tool for analysing and evaluating software operation

After engineers have developed multiple software components side-by-side on the Virtual Turnkey Platform the next step is to integrate and verify that the software runs on a single chip. Software components share resources like the multiple CPUs, IPs on RCar SoCs. It is difficult to identify and fix operational problems after software components have been integrated. Renesas designed the Multicore Debug And Trace Tool to make it easier to identify and analyze the causes of errors resulting from the interaction of multiple hardware resources within R-Car SoCs. This allows simultaneous and synchronous debugging of R-Car’s heterogeneous architecture without having to use the actual device. This allows for early identification of potential problems and speeds up the development process.

Available

The R-Car S4 SoC is available for automotive gateways. Renesas plans to support the R-Car V4H and future R-Car products as well as RH850 automotive MCUs.
